Getting It: Charlie Sheen
Contributed by Rick DeVan on March 8, 2011 at 10:29 am ET
I make no secret of the fact that I am a fan of Charlie Sheen, if nothing else but for Major League.
You have seen or heard Charlie in the last few days, at least in passing. Geez, the guy opened a Twitter account and the LA Times has written three articles about it! So far.
And… he has 2 million plus followers. So far. I am one of them.
And… he is unemployed.
Go for it, Charlie. We are rooting for you all the way.

…laughter may actually be good for business.

Never forget to take time to laugh, if nothing else but for the pure joy of laughing. Smiling works, too.

Resource: Disney: Doing Social Right via the Dachis Group.
Amid all of the holiday chaos, you might have missed an absolutely astounding announcement from Disney in early December. Their Facebook presence extends to over 100 million fans across more than 200 Facebook Pages, and they’re adding more than 5 million fans per week.
Disney is a brand perfectly suited for social media.

Getting It: GiveItBackForJobs.org

Resource: Give It Back For Jobs
Americans who have the means should collectively give back our Bush tax cuts by making donations to organizations that promote fairness, economic growth, and a vibrant middle class.
Resource: Website encourages the rich to give back their tax cuts via Cleveland.com – The Plain Dealer.
Upset the federal government recently extended tax cuts for the rich, three professors at Yale and Cornell universities have created a website that encourages wealthy Americans to give their tax savings to charities and send a political message in the process.
And, from the comments in the Plain Dealer article:
I am going to start a website that encourages rich people to use their extra money, that the government doesn’t extort from them, to expand their businesses to give people jobs so they dont need charity.
Whether you agree with giving tax cuts to charity, using them to expand business, or something else, this is how the conversation expands our thinking. I hope to soon see an alternative website that encourages business expansion. I will be ready with a “Getting It“ for them. Websites that encourage using the tax cuts for a yacht to berth in Monaco, maybe not. But, then again, yachting does create jobs. Dock it in Perth Amboy and I will reconsider.

Getting It: The Poor Clares
Contributed by Rick DeVan on December 24, 2010 at 2:40 pm ET
Locals have already seen the story Poor Clare nuns in Cleveland embrace jubilation of Christmas at Cleveland.com — The Plain Dealer. I just had to give the Poor Clares a “Getting It” because they do, even without actually using the Web.
Yes, an order of cloistered nuns in a monastery on Rocky River Drive gets it.
Sure, they have a web site at Poor Clare Colettines — Cleveland, Ohio, although it has not been updated since February. Sister! That’s OK, though, I will let them slide. After all, the time pace of their lives is a bit slower than those of us non-monastery-type folks. Plus, I think I know exactly what would happen if I complained — I would be given the user name and password and it would be suggested that I do the updating. Trust me, I know nuns.
There are several Facebook groups and pages in support of various Poor Clare communities. There is a even a Facebook group for those interested in joining the Poor Clares to get information and support from others contemplating the move.
None of that is the reason for the “Getting It”, though. The Poor Clares get it because they opened up and let the world in, even if only for a short time; they didn’t hit anyone over the head with flashing lights (I know, mixed metaphors); and they didn’t even try to sell anything directly.
The result? Everyone in Greater Cleveland now knows the Poor Clares run a gift shop at 3501 Rocky River Drive, just north of Kamm’s Corners, and it is open Monday through Saturday, 9-11:00 a.m. and 1-7:00 p.m.
Geez, they take long lunches.
