S’M Tuesday (I): The Social Network Film Saga Continues

Contributed by Rick DeVan on August 24, 2010 at 7:00 am ET

Resource: Facebook Feels Unfriendly Toward Film It Inspired

In Mr. Sorkin’s telling, Mr. Zuckerberg is not so much villain as antihero, a flawed human being whose deep need for acceptance becomes the driving force behind a Web site that offers the illusion of it.

If “The Godfather” was about family and “Network” about rage, “The Social Network” appears to be mostly about emptiness.

…the illusion of it. Keep that in mind whether you are an individual or a small business using social media. Also keep in mind that this film is about the founding of Facebook and not about Facebook or social media today.

Social media is not only changing the world — the world is changing social media.

S’M Tuesday (I): Social Networking Lunch at 4Food

Contributed by Rick DeVan on August 17, 2010 at 7:00 am ET

Resource: Making Lunch a Social Networking Game

The new New York City restaurant, 4Food, set to open Sept. 7, is designed to serve as a community and social networking hub.

Here’s how it works: I create a burger, call it “The Bits Burger” and broadcast it to Twitter or Facebook. Each time someone orders my special creation, I get 25 cents credit in the restaurant and my burger rises up the leaderboard. The more customers order my burger, the higher it goes and the more credits I get, until I’m eating free.

Refreshingly innovative!

S’M Tuesday (I): E-Readers

Contributed by Rick DeVan on June 29, 2010 at 7:00 am ET

Resource: Roll-Up Computers and Their Kin

So what’s next for these digital book replacements? Will the e-reader be reduced to a tiny chip that can be implanted in our retina by 2015? Not quite, but those who think a lot about the future say e-readers are set to take on new shapes and sizes, and their prices will continue to fall.

Smaller. Faster. Cheaper. But will technology merely enhance the experience for those who already read books or will it help draw in those who do not?
