Future: In the Year 2020…

Resource: The Internet in 2020 — Predictions We Can Count On

Internet in 2020

I generally don’t like predictions, although I think it is important to look at trends. As usual with anything to do with the Internet, some of the numbers are so big that they are incomprehensible (and therefore useless) to the common user.

Just a few comments. We use way too much electricity, probably without even thinking about it. I chart the gas mileage of my vehicle and make sure it is tuned-up and the tires are properly inflated. I turn off lights when not in use. I don’t let the water run unnecessarily. I rarely think of the amount of electricity used in preparing, uploading, and reading this blog. I create websites that are as fast as possible with a minimal amount of coding, but that is mainly for usability, not conservation. Green electricity or not, it is still a resource.

My other comment is, please, can we stop using the word “hackers”? Call them what they really are: “terrorists”. The experts say the risk of a cyber attack on the electric grid is real. Very real. (Resource: NERC – High-Impact, Low-Frequency

Thriv’Able Special: Buy Local in NEO (and Anywhere Else)

Resource: Take the Buy Local Challenge during Buy Local Week, July 3 – July 10.

This is a great idea for Northeast Ohio and anywhere else you may live, IF you keep in mind that the big-box national/international retailers and restaurants also employ your neighbors and contribute to the local tax base.

Don’t forsake one neighbor for the other.

Thriv’Able Special: Visualize The Oil

Contributed by Rick DeVan on June 18, 2010 at 3:39 pm ET

Resource: Visualizing the BP Oil Spill Disaster.

Admittedly, this isn’t “Thriv’Able”, but it does help us visualize the size of the disaster. Centered on my home town of Willoughby, Ohio, the oil would stretch from Toledo to Buffalo and cover all of Lake Erie. That’s as of today.

Thriv’Able Thursday (IV): Digital Communities

Resource: Neighbors Online

Americans use a range of approaches to keep informed about what is happening in their communities and online activities have been added to the mix. Face-to-face encounters and phone calls remain the most frequent methods of interaction with neighbors. At the same time, internet tools are gaining ground in community-oriented communications.

People communicating with their neighbors is always a good thing — and powerful.

Thriv’Able Thursday (IV): Gulf Coast Disaster and Social Media

Contributed by Rick DeVan on June 3, 2010 at 7:20 am ET

Resource: 4 Social Media Efforts to Aid the Gulf Coast.
Via Mashable.

The far-reaching Gulf oil spill tragedy has left many people feeling powerless to help out. But beyond the official Deep Horizon response, pockets of non-profits and people are starting to use social media tools to organize grassroots activities throughout the Gulf region.

Even though it is impossible to predict disasters, I would like to see some sort of system be put in place so the grassroots work can get started immediately.
