Marketing: Qantas

Contributed by Rick DeVan on September 2, 2011 at 8:00 pm ET

Resource: Qantas sorry for ‘racist’ tweet via The Sydney Morning Herald.

Qantas has been embarrassed by a publicity stunt on Twitter that backfired. The airline yesterday issued an apology for awarding free tickets to the Bledisloe Cup on Saturday night to two Brisbane men who “blacked up” to impersonate their favourite Wallaby.

You know the drill: “Think before you tweet.”

Marketing: Entenmann’s

Contributed by Rick DeVan on July 8, 2011 at 5:11 pm ET

Resource: Entenmann’s Hashtag Surfing Fails Hard With #NotGuilty Tweet via The Washington Post.

I have waited a couple of days to post and comment on this story. You may have heard of it already, at least in passing. Like in the Kenneth Cole fiasco (Marketing: Kenneth Cole), my cynical angel reminds me that having a Twitter post including a trending hashtag up for fifteen minutes is an eternity in Twitter time. After fifteen minutes no one else would see it anyway so you may as well take it down. If it was intentional it got the job done. Peoples is talking.

My realist angel says: “Forego the Gaga and listen to the news on the way to work.”

Advertising: Online Do Not Track Bill in California

Contributed by Rick DeVan on April 7, 2011 at 11:16 am ET

Resource: Online &lsqup;do not track’ bill introduced in California Senate via LATimes.com.

“Nearly 80% of Californians use the Internet and nearly 45% use Facebook, including myself,” Lowenthal said. “But, today, millions of Californians are unaware that their online behavior is being tracked, their data collected and sold to advertisers.”

If you are not aware you are being tracked you must not be noticing the advertising on websites and Facebook. (Don’t worry… this site is not tracking you.)

Is tracking necessarily a bad thing? I am still on the fence on this one. On one hand, it is nice to get targeted information and advertising and it helps advertisers spend their budget wisely. On the other hand, it is a little creepy.

Marketing: Groupon Apologizes

Contributed by Rick DeVan on February 12, 2011 at 11:08 am ET

Resource: One Last Post on the Super Bowl.

We hate that we offended people, and we’re very sorry that we did — it’s the last thing we wanted…

Is your cynicism meter redlining, too? The problem with this strategy is that it is unsustainable.

Marketing: Kenneth Cole

Contributed by Rick DeVan on February 7, 2011 at 11:06 am ET

Resource: Kenneth Cole apologizes for tweet using Egypt protests to promote fashion line via LATimes.com.

Kenneth Cole sent out a controversial tweet that used the unrest in Egypt to promote his spring fashion line.

The cynical angel on my left shoulder whispers that this was all a set-up (Kenneth Cole did not redirect the link to an apology page after removing the tweet).

The realist angel on my right shoulder says: “Take the Blackberry away from the boss.”
