Getting It: Charlie Sheen
Contributed by Rick DeVan on March 8, 2011 at 10:29 am ET
I make no secret of the fact that I am a fan of Charlie Sheen, if nothing else but for Major League.
You have seen or heard Charlie in the last few days, at least in passing. Geez, the guy opened a Twitter account and the LA Times has written three articles about it! So far.
And… he has 2 million plus followers. So far. I am one of them.
And… he is unemployed.
Go for it, Charlie. We are rooting for you all the way.

Resource: Facebook Reaches Majority of US Web Users via eMarketer.com.
By 2013, 62% of web users and almost half (47.6%) of the overall US population will be on Facebook.
…
By the end of 2010, 16.4 million US adults, or 9% of the adult internet population, used Twitter.
FYI. Keep in mind that although both fall under the social media umbrella, Facebook and Twitter are different.

Readings: Tweeting teens can handle public life (Alice Marwick and Danah Boyd)

Resource: Tweeting teens can handle public life via www.guardian.co.uk
To teens, Twitter and Facebook have different purposes. Matthew, another 17-year-old from North Carolina, told us: “On Facebook, if someone writes their emotions every five minutes, it’s just obnoxious.” … Matthew and his friends call this “blowing up your news feed” and it’s looked down upon. But on Twitter, it’s perfectly OK to talk about the meal you just ate, or the moment-to-moment sadness you feel, because the site encourages such minutia — and you can always unfollow someone if they tweet too much.
Read this for insights into the use of social networks by teenagers. Remember, the teens of today are developing the way social media will be used tomorrow. In fact, we all are.
Somehow, I think this song is appropriate.

Research: Twitter Accents
Contributed by Rick DeVan on January 12, 2011 at 9:43 am ET
Resource: Twitter is full of regional ‘accents’ via the New Zealand Herald.
Carnegie Mellon University examined 380,000 messages from Twitter during one week in March 2010 and found that the social networking site is full of its own kinds of geographical dialects.
Even as the world gets smaller — or bigger — we are still maintaining our accents.
