Future: In the Year 2020…

Resource: The Internet in 2020 — Predictions We Can Count On
I generally don’t like predictions, although I think it is important to look at trends. As usual with anything to do with the Internet, some of the numbers are so big that they are incomprehensible (and therefore useless) to the common user.
Just a few comments. We use way too much electricity, probably without even thinking about it. I chart the gas mileage of my vehicle and make sure it is tuned-up and the tires are properly inflated. I turn off lights when not in use. I don’t let the water run unnecessarily. I rarely think of the amount of electricity used in preparing, uploading, and reading this blog. I create websites that are as fast as possible with a minimal amount of coding, but that is mainly for usability, not conservation. Green electricity or not, it is still a resource.
My other comment is, please, can we stop using the word “hackers”? Call them what they really are: “terrorists”. The experts say the risk of a cyber attack on the electric grid is real. Very real. (Resource: NERC – High-Impact, Low-Frequency

Change is happening within the U.S. Internet population on many levels. The average age of Internet users is rising in tandem with that of the general population, for example, and racial and ethnic characteristics are more closely mirroring those in the offline population.
Another reason to fully integrate your business online and offline.

Resource: Six Easy Steps to Avert the Collapse of Civilization
I’m posting this as a food-for-thought item. Oftentimes the individual Internet user does not realize just how much of our society is now interconnected with networks and the Internet. Yes, it’s more and bigger than e-mail, Twitter, and Facebook.
That being said, is it even possible for the Net to go down? I mean the entire Net, worldwide. Or, would it be more like a local natural disaster such as an earthquake or hurricane where the rest of the world steps in to help?

This is good, although I am concerned it may give impetus to a cyber-attack against the U.S.
