Statistics: American eReader

Contributed by Rick DeVan on September 30, 2010 at 7:44 pm ET

Resource: One in Ten Americans Use an eReader; One in Ten Likely To Get One in Next Six Months

First, those who have eReaders do, in fact, read more. Overall, two in five Americans (40%) read 11 or more books a year with one in five reading 21 or more books in a year (19%). But among those who have an eReader, over one-third read 11-20 books a year (36%) and over one-quarter read 21 or more books in an average year (26%).

I happen to be writing this from the third floor of Morley Library in Painesville, Ohio. Within my line of sight are stacks of music CDs that seem as quaint as 78 RPM records, stack after stack of multi-volume, uni-colored reference books, a section labeled “Libros en Español”, and a section of spoken books that you are not allowed to listen to without headphones. All of these could probably fit easily on my laptop’s hard drive or onto a standard eReader. I imagine that at some point in the future all the books will be gone and the library will be filled with
… people on their eReaders.

At that point, the library will have become a coffee house.

The Importance of Net Neutrality

Contributed by Rick DeVan on at 6:49 pm ET

With net neutrality in the news, here are a few resources to keep you up-to-speed on this unnecessarily complex issue. The concept is simple: People have the right to have access to information of the Internet.

One would think this is obvious beyond debate.

Resource: Why net neutrality is important for freedom

Net neutrality means different things to different people, but in general, it can be summarized by four key points.

People should be able to:

  • access any lawful content that they like
  • use any application of their choice
  • use any device of their choice
  • have choice among competing service and content providers

Resource: Net Neutrality at NYTimes.com.

This list is nowhere near exhaustive. That would be impossible. But it will give you a start if you desire to learn more.

Resource: Student in Tape Kills Himself

A New Jersey college student jumped to his death off a bridge a day after authorities say two classmates surreptitiously recorded him having sex with a man in his dorm room and broadcast it over the Internet.

I have no words to add to this story.

Resource: Nielsen Announces “Major Step Forward” in Online Advertising Measurement

Perhaps most importantly, marketers and media companies alike will now have a simpler way to measure the combined reach of TV, the web and even mobile advertising.
