Not Getting It: LeBron James

Contributed by Rick DeVan on July 9, 2010 at 2:40 am ET

I admit that I’m a biased Cleveland Cavs fan. So… I’m less than happy about LeBron James leaving us.

While watching the announcement tonight that LeBron James is joining the Miami Heat I was struck with one thing: LeBron is all about LeBron and what makes LeBron happy, which is not necessarily more money but more like a championship ring. It was almost childlike.

My first thought was that he is very much a man of his generation. My second thought was that he and his self-centered attitude already seem outdated and, well, more than a little pathetic.

Then, I read Dan Gilbert’s open letter to fans: James’ decision a ‘cowardly betrayal’ and owner promises a title before Heat and realized that, yes, maybe extreme self-centeredness is dying off.

Gilbert was about us, our community, our home. LeBron was about LeBron.

In reading several friend’s Facebook and Twitter updates I realized this, also. Many immediately started posting items about our home and our own work toward that new day that is just over the horizon. Without LeBron James. And social media is playing a big role.

I don’t think LeBron will be hated in Cleveland. I think he will be pitied for not getting it. His attitude is yesterday.
