Phishing attacks via DM (Direct Message) are not as rare as we would like. These are two good resources from Twitter on keeping safe.

Three additional personal protection tactics to consider:

1) Keep the list of those you follow relatively small. My goal is 75 on each account. If you can’t keep it that low make sure you know well those you follow.

2) Avoid “The Collectors” — users who follow an inordinately large number of accounts, say… 21,359. They are not reading your updates. Don’t be fooled.

3) Use the RSS feed option on a profile before following someone or a business you don’t know well.

Hopefully, Twitter can figure out a way to stop or minimize these types of attacks.
